Miscellaneous Methods of Pressurizing

Coal Preheat with Hot Syngas

In various process schemes it has been proposed to inject coal-water slurry into the hot gas leaving the gasifier, thus cooling the gas, evaporating the water, and preheating the coal. This preheated coal is separated in cyclones and is fed to the gasifier as a dense phase in syngas (van der Burgt and van Liere 1994). Such a process scheme achieves a similar effect to the countercurrent flow in a Lurgi gasifier or the second stage of an E-Gas gasifier. It has also been proposed for feeding Victorian browncoal in Australia (Anderson etal. 1998).

Solids Pumping

Various other types of equipment have been developed for pressurizing pulverized coal, but thus far none have been very successful. Examples are piston machines and the Stamet pump (Chambert 1993; O’Keefe 1994). However, mostly the machines are either too complicated or vulnerable to fouling and erosion. Moreover, most of them are only suitable for pressurizing up to 5-10 bar.

Atmospheric Operation

One conclusion to be drawn from the whole discussion of pressurizing coal is that it is not easy, and there is a permanent concern for availability. This has led some to question the wisdom of trying and to propose an advanced atmospheric process as a preferred development route (Davey et al. 1998). The economics of such an approach are discussed in Chapter 9.
