Fast growing, purpose-grown, short-rotation woody crops are an excellent source of sustainable feedstock for cellulosic ethanol. This option has the added advantage of reducing pressure on native forests and managing the remaining landscape for non-production benefits. These dedicated fast growing energy crops can be grown in a range of climate zones and many parts of the world. Trees being considered for commercial use as biomass feedstock can be categorized into the following four genera:

1. Populus (cottonwoods, poplars, aspens, and their hybrids)

2. Salix (willows)

3. Pinus (pines)

4. Eucalyptus (eucalypts)
