Determining the Rate of Heat Transfer from the Wellbore to the Formation

The radial heat flow at the cement-formation interface can be determined by using the following approximate equation proposed by Ramey (1962):

where:

ke = thermal conductivity of the formation (‘earth’), Btu/hr ft°F.

/(f) = transient heat conduction function.

7 = temperature at cement-formation interface, °F.

= Tcmo (for steady-state heat flow).

Te — undisturbed temperature of the formation, °F.
